If you're reading this, then count yourself one of the survivors. As much hardship as recessions bring to some people, especially those who lost due to their financial investments being in the wrong place, other people are already counting their blessings. Recessions bring out a fight or flight survival mentality in some people, and these same individuals overnight, go from being unemployed to self-employed, and loving every minute of it.
That's my great words of wisdom to anyone finding this recession financially challenging, and that's go independent. I received an email from a work placement intern that I had mentored. Shes back in Spain now, and says that in spite of sending out her CV to hundreds of employers, she hasn't found work. In her case, things couldn't have turned out better. Shes making jewelery, and trying to sell it. Given her tight start-up budget, shes actually only able to buy new supplies when shes sold one of her pieces. But what better way to learn if you are exercising your passion or not, that's what Id say. While shes waiting for her sale, shes designing her next pieces of jewelery.
Just the other day, I heard the same idea from Jim, the caretaker in our building. He said find what you love doing, and then you'll never work another day in your life. Hes opted for a compromise, whereby hes taken a job that pays the bills, while pursuing his passion, sailing, on the weekends. I sensed though that hes not far off from making sailing his source of revenue.
Work with your strength- obsessions. I adhere to the definition of a strength being something that you're naturally good at and that comes with relative ease, and that you feel compelled to do repeatedly, almost obsessively. Some people write, some people cook, some people sail and some people bake break. Working with a strength is a sure-fire way of tapping into the energy required to fuel your work with passion project. Jim did say, that most people that work independently, work long hours, but given the choice of working 9 to 5 doing something you hate, and 9 to 9 doing something you love, there really isn't a big choice to make.
Going independent is really about doing what you're supposed to do on this planet, while getting paid for it. It can happen overnight, but definitely will cause even the most strong of heart, to take a leap of faith that is uncomfortable. My mantra, which I encourage anyone thinking of making such a change is Change is Good. Follow your Passion. Blessed are those, like Jim, who know what their calling is. Its like receiving a precious gift from God. Handle it with care and judiciously. - 29969
